The amyloidogenic peptide hormone amylin (or Islet Amyloid Polypeptide, IAPP) has been isolated from the amyloid-rich pancreases of diabetic patients. IAPP forms fibrillar peptide deposits in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans, which may be related to death of the insulin-producing islet β-cells in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
